Maruthua Malai is a sacred hill expecially for Guru Narayana and other ancient sages like Agasthyar, Paramartha lingeshwar etc. and there on the top of this hill have a cave known as Pillathadam where Guru Narayana used to meditation for many years. At that time the hill was covered with trees having thorn and animals like leopord and strong poisoned snakes. When Guru was discoverd with such animals the peoples of plain were amazed with him and he said to them as advice that "animals will not attack you if you have no fear or anger towards them or any inclination to hurt them." The people living in the plains are mainly farmers who depend up on agriculture and livestock for their living. During the period of that age Guru was filled with absolute knowledge of wisdom and bliss of Brahma from Super Soul and also believed that the lord Siva appeared before Guru Narayana and then he was converted to one of the greatest sage of the world. Srimat.Chattampi Swami and Guru Narayana were friends and living together here for some years. The hill is also reffered to Budhist sages who belonged to the period of Asoka as having medicinal and spiritual heritage
According to tradition, the Maruthuva Malai is a fragment of the Sanjeevi Mountain, a piece of which fell down here, and it was carried by Hanuman from Mahendragiri to Lanka for healing the fatal wounds of Lakshmana, the brother of Rama, the epic hero. It stretches for more than a km, reaching a height of 800 feet at the highest point. It is about 2 km from Swamithoppe and 11 km from Nagercoil on the way of Kanyakumari.
